Here is my understanding on future dev experience on Windows:

  1. Dev box setup: Windows Developer Configurations uses WinGet to provision a complete development environment (VS Code, GitHub Copilot, WSL, Python, Git, etc.)
  2. Native Linux workflow: built Coreutils for Windows from uutils, cross-platform reimplementation of GNU Coreutils in Rust, Linux-like command-line utilities that run natively on Windows
  3. Built-in containers: WSL containers CLI & API (Access functions to run Linux containers programmatically in your native Windows apps), WSL GitHub is open-source
  4. AI-powered intelligent terminal
  5. Windows Development Skills power AI coding agents for domain-specific toolkit or API knowledge
  6. Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) introduce OS-enforced isolation, permissions, and identity for AI agents

Device-side attributes of Project Solara:

  • Microsoft Device Ecosystem Platform (MDEP) is an enterprise-grade operating system built on AOSP, designed to meet the highest standards of security, reliability, ease of deployment, and innovation — enabling device makers to build and deploy at scale.
  • Agent Shell that can dynamically load and tailor multiple cloud-based agents.
  • Microsoft Intune allows IT administrators to manage and secure these devices just like PC and mobile devices today.
  • Entra ID so users can use their existing Microsoft accounts.
  • Hello for Business with at least one biometric authentication method, like facial recognition or fingerprint, allowing seamless access to the device.
  • Easy privacy controls like a physical mic mute button, and clear indicators when listening or recording.
  • Approved chipsets accompanied with applicable reference designs.
